Profile

Rachael Schmidt McCleave

Rachael grew up in Whanganui before moving to Dunedin in 1991 to complete a BA in English Literature while studying a law. She has spent most of her working life as a lawyer in Wellington and is now a coroner. While in Wellington, Rachael completed the Bill Manhire MA in Creative Writing at Victoria University.

Always an avid reader, Rachael has had a number of non-fiction law texts published but her real love is writing fiction. Two years ago, in a bid to encourage her sports-loving pre-teen son to read, Rachael started writing pre-teen literature hoping to inspire young boys to read by incorporating adventure and interesting ideas into fun, action-packed tales. She loves the creative freedom which comes with writing children’s literature.

Rachael lives on the Kāpiti Coast with her husband, youngest son, two older stepchildren who come and go from their new homes in Dunedin and Cairns respectively, and the family’s much loved three cats. In her spare time, when not curled up on the couch reading, Rachael enjoys adventure sports (mountain biking, skiing, tramping and paddle boarding), plays women’s cricket, coaches basketball and has recently taken up golf.
