Profile

Deborah Hinde

From a young age Deborah Hinde showed a talent for drawing and had a dream that one day she’d be an artist. After working as a candle maker, a woven label designer, a paste-up artist, and a point of sale and signage visualiser, and then freelancing as a graphic designer, Deborah started working full time as an illustrator as a way to avoid working on computers for manufacturers, publishers and advertising agencies. It wasn’t until 2002 when she illustrated her first picture book A Kiwi Night Before Christmas that her dream of illustrating books became a reality. Since those early days she has illustrated more than 70 books, 40 of which are picture books, and a number of which she has written herself.

Deborah works full time, focusing on picture books for publishing houses and for her own imprint from her home-based studio in rural Waikato.
