Storylines Margaret Mahy Medal winner for 2009, Andrew Crowe’s non-fiction books about New Zealand’s flora and fauna are popular and educational. Andrew was born in England, and arrived in New Zealand in 1972. Designing and taking the photographs for many of his books, he has written more than 40 titles which have established his reputation as one of the country’s foremost writers of natural history for children and adults.
His books have been finalists many times for various book awards. “When you think about New Zealand non-fiction,” says Kids Lit Quiz quizmaster Wayne Mills, “the name that is most synonymous with this genre is Andrew Crowe.” Andrew’s books sell to both young people and adults, and are in almost every school library in New Zealand.
Andrew has consistently produced high-quality non-fiction books of unique appropriateness for New Zealand children and young adults. He has arguably done more to shape the format and accessibility of information in children’s non-fiction in New Zealand than any other author.
His latest two books celebrate the considerable voyaging achievements of Māori and their Polynesian ancestors: Pathway of the Birds received a 2019 Storylines Notable Book Award, the New Zealand Heritage Book Award (Non-Fiction) 2019 and two Ka Palapala Po’okela Awards 2019 from Hawaii.
