Original Artwork by Donovan Bixley

Ham Actor

Medium – pencil and digital painting.

42 cm x 29.5 cm unframed.

From Much Ado About Shakespeare: A Literary Picture Book (Upstart Press, 2016)

Donovan Bixley writes: “The painting depicts Oberon strutting the stage at The Theatre in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. ‘The purpose of playing … was and is, to hold, as ‘twere, the mirror up to nature.’ – Hamlet

“By 1598 Will’s name as playwright was now a drawcard on its own, and he created roles specifically to suit the actors in his troupe. No longer was he just entertaining the crowds but reflecting the heart of human nature …

“The actors expressed every emotion with a formal action, and the style of the time was to strut and fret about the stage, showing off your hamstrings, which gives us the term ‘ham’ acting. It was a grand and exaggerated performance which Elizabethans called ‘tearing a cat upon the stage’… Hamlet himself bemoans actors who ‘saw the air too much with their hands’ and ‘tear a passion to tatters’.”

The Eyes of Tāwhirimātea

Painted with oneone (earth pigment) and kōkōwai (ochre) sourced from Whakatāne and Te Tai Poutini.

The image in the white frame measures 34 x 34 cm

Isobel writes: “At the separation of his parents, Tāwhirimātea grieved. Longing to be with his father Ranginui, he tore out his eyes and crushed them, flinging them up into the heavens, where they became the Matariki constellation.

“The step-pattern incorporates two tukutuku (lattice) elements: Poutama, which describes learning and ascension, and Roimata Toroā, which represent the trials and tribulations of a long journey.”
