Ross Calman

Dr Ross Calman (Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāi Tahu) is a writer, historian, editor and te reo Māori translator based in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

In 2023 Ross received an Honorary Doctor of Arts from the University of Canterbury in recognition of his contribution in the fields of Māori history, publishing and translation. The Te Rauparaha: Kei Wareware podcast which he co-wrote and hosted received a Gold award at the 2024 New York Festivals Radio Awards.

His published works include He Pukapuka Tātaku i ngā Mahi a Te Rauparaha Nui / A Record of the Life of the Great Te Rauparaha (AUP, 2020) and He Atua, He Tangata: The World of Māori Mythology (Oratia, 2021).

His latest book, The Treaty of Waitangi / Te Tiriti o Waitangi, was published by Oratia in January and has been shortlisted in the non-fiction section of the 2025 NZCYA Book Awards. It follows up from the success of the graphic novel-style Te Tiriti o Waitangi, co-authored with Toby Morris and Mark Derby, that was published by Lift in 2019.

In addition to being a prolific non-fiction author, Ross has edited dozens of children’s books and translated many more into te reo Māori. He is now turning his hand to fiction and poetry – watch this space!
