Anne Kayes

Anne Kayes Sep19-871

Anne has been a Drama and English teacher at both secondary and tertiary level. Alongside teaching, she wrote scripts for students, and skits that she performed in comedy shows. One year, she co-wrote a solo show that she performed in schools.

Anne's collection of stories for 8 - 12-year olds, Tūī Street Tales, won the 2016 Storylines Tom Fitzgibbon Award. The idea was developed in the Masters of Creative Writing at Auckland University of Technology in 2014. Her second book, Tūī Street Heroes, was published in 2019 and received a 2020 Storylines Notable Book Award. Anne's first young adult novel, In Our Own Back Yard, is about the experiences of a 15-year old girl during the 1981 Springbok Tour and available in shops from July 2021.

Anne lives with her family in Mt. Albert, Auckland. She visits schools to do dramatic readings and to discuss writing and reading with students. She also offers creative writing workshops for students.
