Lynley Dodd

Lynley_Dodd_1.jpgDame Lynley Dodd was born in 1941. An only child, she lived with her parents for the next 17 years in Kaingaroa Forest, near Taupo. She was fascinated by illustration from an early age. She studied at Auckland's Elam School of Art and Teacher's College and then taught art at Queen Margaret College.
Lynley has captivated generations of small children with the exploits of favourite characters such as Hairy Maclary, Scarface Claw, and Slinki Malinki. As Tom Fitzgibbon writes in his book Beneath Southern Skies (1993), ‘Lynley Dodd is not only a gifted artist but she also has a love of language and a flair for writing... her books are of classic standard and will continue to excite young listeners and readers as well as their parents.'
The popularity of her books has led to the formation of Maclary Theatre Productions for the staging of musicals based on the stories of Hairy MaclaryDragon in a WagonSlinky Malinki, and The Nickle Nackle Tree. Lynley lives in Tauranga with her husband Tony and a beautiful Burmese cat. She continues to write and illustrate one picture book a year.
