Helen Bacon

Helen Bacon was born in Te Awamutu, Waikato in 1968, but grew up in Hawera, South Taranaki, the middle of three daughters. As a child she loved art and music, especially books with beautiful illustrations. Helen played the recorder, clarinet and piano, and loved dressing up and putting on plays. In 1995 Helen graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts (University of Auckland) with a BFA in printmaking. During this time she also developed her interest in puppetry and bookbinding. Helen began illustrating educational children’s books in 1999, which was an exciting new direction for her. She has travelled extensively overseas, residing in both South Devon, England and Auckland, New Zealand over the past ten years. She loves to garden, to make magical things, look for bargains, keep hens, go to the rodeo, bake delicious puddings and wear colourful costumes!
