Malcolm Paterson

Malcolm_Paterson_1.jpgMalcolm Paterson belongs to Ngâti Whâtua of Tâmaki and the Kaipara. He plays a variety of roles within the iwi – as co-manager of the Ngâti Whâtua o Kaipara Treaty of Waitangi Claim Team and as a representative regarding heritage and environmental management issues. Recently he has worked as a researcher under contract to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

 As well as being a qualified doctor of medicine, Malcolm holds an MSc in environmental management . His thesis was focused on the management of Mâori heritage sites in Auckland – Maungakiekie being the case study.

Malcolm was born and raised in Auckland and is committed to seeing the heritage and cultural importance of the region’s historic places better known and valued. He hopes that books such as The Castle in Our Backyard will inspire not only Aucklanders, but New Zealanders in general, to understand and care for our unique heritage places.
