Julia Owen was born in Auckland on Christmas Eve, 1960. She finished her primary education while her family was living in Rarotonga, before returning to Howick. In 1996 Julia took a six-month course called Te tuhi tuhi ma nga tamariki: writing for children in Māori and English, at Rawene Polytech. Julia is the mother of four boys and currently lives in the Hokianga being a farmer and writer.
