David Elliot was born in Ashburton (1952) and is a graduate of the Christchurch College of Education, and also holds a Fine Arts Diploma in Painting from the University of Canterbury. He has had a varied career including a job as gatekeeper at Edinburgh Zoo, which he describes as the 'pivotal experience' which led him to a career in illustration, washing dishes in Antarctica and also designing interiors for Australian pubs. He has worked for many years as an art teacher, both in secondary schools and in courses for adults and has won awards for many of his books.
