Margaret Andrew studied at the university of Otago, and later at the University of Auckland. After completing a teaching diploma she taught in primary schools in Auckland and Poverty Bay. After specialising in art she became a full-time art teacher. In the UK, from 1979 to 1981, she was the personal assistant to the Director of the Scott Polar Research Institute. She took a cruise to the Antarctic in 1996 and in 2000 she went to the New Zealand sub-Antarctic islands.
