Deborah Burnside comes from Taradale, Hawke's Bay. Deborah has three sons, and is a partner in her husband's business, a waste disposal company. She is also a singer and actor. In 2001, Deborah took part in the NZSA mentoring scheme, working with Tessa Duder. She has combined her creative talents with her business skills to help set up The Hawke’s Bay Writing Competition.
