Peace Story

PeaceStory CoverArtists and authors from 22 IBBY host countries have contributed to this anthology for children on the subject of peace. The anthology is unique in offering the reader a wonderful diversity of writing and illustration styles - truly, a feast for the imagination - from countries as far-flung as Moldova, Palestine and China.

The New Zealand contribution is a story by Jennifer Beck called 'Remember that November' about the peaceful resistance of the Parihaka people in 1881 when the soldiers came to attack. The story is illustrated by Lindy Fisher's stunning images.

Since the publication of Peace Story in 2010, 'Remember that November' has been accepted by Huia Publishing to be published as a stand-alone picture book.

As IBBY President Patricia Aldana comments in the introduction: "Peace Story will remind us all of our intent: to build bridges of understanding and peace within our diverse world. We shall continue to struggle for our deep-seated beliefs: that children have a right to become readers; to live in peace; to grow healthy and strong so that they can, in turn, work for these ideals."

Royalties generated from the foreign sales of Peace Story are being donated to IBBY.

Find out more about the creation of the Peace Story in this article by Rosemary Tisdall. Crissi Blair has also written about the Peace Story and Nami Island in an article originally published in Magpies.
These articles are reprinted here with the kind permission of the authors and original publishers.
